Lots of writers now only quote from original interviews, archives or physical books -- anything else is too dangerous. It takes forever and I'm not sure there's another way.

Earlier this year, author Steven Rosenbaum took a phone call that turned his world upside down. The book he had spent three years researching and writing, he was informed, contained quotations fabricated by AI tools.

"When I learnt there were factual inaccuracies in The Future of Truth, my first reaction was: that's impossible," Rosenbaum tells the FT two months after the discovery. "It had gone through a traditional publishing process with multiple rounds of editing and review."

Rosenbaum had been clear about the use of AI tools in his nonfiction book - ironically, a study of the future of truth and technology - but had used them only to research and organise material, including summarising source documents and interviews.

"What I failed to recognise was that, in some cases, it transformed those summaries into what appeared to be direct quotations," he says. "The danger isn't that AI writes bad prose. The danger is that it writes persuasive prose attached to facts that never existed."

It is a chaotic scene on the National Mall. Several hundred people have refused to leave despite an order to evacuate because of severe inclement weather that is approaching. Some are even arguing with Secret Service agents. At one point, a crowd of people began running back toward the stage. An officer is sternly repeating the order over a bullhorn and the crowd is booing. Many have begun chanting "U.S.A., U.S.A." A federal law enforcement officer is trying to assure people that the event has not been canceled. Many are not convinced. For carbon capture, projections show rapid ramp up of production, starting around 2020, with massive production growth over time. In reality, production is still at zero to date.

For solar power, projections show moderate growth over time, though some projections are somewhat promising. Actual solar power production has vastly exceeded even the most optimistic projection models, with current production over 2000 terawatts (2 petawatts, I think?) of power output.
