Approximately one-third of the nation’s tidal energy resource is estimated to be in Alaska’s Cook Inlet, and more than 90% of the nation’s tidal resource is distributed throughout Alaska (Kilcher, Fogarty, and Lawson 2021). The technical resource potential of Cook Inlet is estimated to be 80 terawatt-hours per year (TWh/yr)—more than 15 times the present-day Railbelt electricity consumption of approximately 5.2 TWh/yr (U.S. Energy Information Administration 2023). The most promising tidal energy sites in Cook Inlet are located alongside the Kenai Peninsula, where Homer Electric Association (HEA) operates the southernmost portion of Alaska’s Railbelt electricity grid. HEA has a customer base of approximately 33,000 customers and sold 496 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of power in 2020—with an average load of approximately 56 megawatts (MW) (HEA 2020). As the sole grid operator south of the Kenai Intertie, HEA has a unique stake in and responsibility for the integration of tidal energy into the Railbelt grid. Furthermore, HEA plays a critical role in the Railbelt grid as the operator of the Bradley Lake hydroelectric facility—the largest hydroelectric power station in the state (Homer Electric Association Inc. n.d.). Tidal energy provides unique opportunities to the HEA system and Railbelt grid. In particular, the channel just offshore of the East Foreland, near Nikiski Alaska, contains high quality tidal energy resources near the transmission network (see Figure 14 for a map of the Cook Inlet with the East Foreland identified). An existing high-voltage substation located near the project site could be used to interconnect tidal energy to the HEA system. Additionally, unlike most renewables, tidal energy is highly predictable and has the potential to provide baseload when combined with energy storage.
The Dunleavy administration has already overseen a significant reduction in the number of SNAP recipients in Alaska. When Dunleavy entered office in 2018, the average number of Alaskans receiving food assistance through the program every month exceeded 85,000. As of last year, average participation dropped below 65,000.
Sen. Bill Wielechowski, D-Anchorage, took to social media on Thursday to accuse Dunleavy of working for “a Texas billionaire,” the owner of Hilcorp. “Yeah, that’s bulls**t. OK, that’s bulls**t. He’s just — and you could quote me, that’s bulls**t. OK, he’s a bulls**tter,” Dunleavy said of Wielechowski, speaking to reporters after a news conference on Thursday evening. “He is one of a handful in the Senate and the Democrats that are going to try and kill this gas line for the very people they purport to represent — poor people, single moms with kids — that their bills are going through the roof. Why doesn’t he give a rip about them? Why doesn’t he care about them?”

A judge issued an arrest warrant for Molly and Kyle Bates after investigators said they were concerned the couple might flee the country. Court records indicate they have not been arrested. Kyle Bates is also among the largest listed donors to the Repeal Now campaign supporting a ballot measure that would end Alaska’s open primaries and ranked choice voting.

Dunleavy himself benefited heavily from unlimited donations to his 2022 campaign, including from his Texas-based brother, Francis Dunleavy, who gave him hundreds of thousands of dollars as he sought reelection. In 2018, when Alaska still had strict contribution limits, Francis Dunleavy and other wealthy backers of the aspiring governor instead gave to an independent group.
A proposal to impose campaign contribution limits was winning approval in the state primary election as of late Tuesday night, with supporters capturing more than 74 percent of the vote.

Spain was involved in the Thirty Years' War until 1648 and the Franco-Spanish War until 1659, while Portugal was involved in the Dutch–Portuguese War until 1663. In the 17th century and afterwards, this period of sporadic conflict was simply known, in Portugal and elsewhere, as the Acclamation War. The war established the House of Braganza as Portugal's new ruling dynasty, replacing the House of Habsburg, which had been united with the Portuguese crown since the 1580 succession crisis.[2]
