Because man cannot live with the conscious realization that his purpose in life is destruction, Taggart is forced to evade understanding his true motives. He lies to himself endlessly, trying to convince himself that he seeks to gain wealth, to protect the interests of his railroad, to help "friends" such as Orren Boyle, or to serve the "public welfare." The truth is that Taggart doesn't value wealth, life, the railroad, success, Boyle, or the public. If "value" means to have a strong positive commitment to some life-enhancing person, object, or process, Taggart values nothing. On the contrary, he hates people capable of achieving values and living successfully. He is riddled with envy, which Ayn Rand defines as "hatred of the good for being the good." Only one thing compels him: to wreak such devastation that the good have no chance to survive.
The country is divided into masters and slaves. A big political problem is that many of the slaves think they are masters, or at least side with the masters at crucial moments—because they think they are white. I wanted to understand why the Irish, coming from conditions about as bad as could be imagined and thrown into low positions when they arrived, came to side with the oppressor rather than with the oppressed.
What these syndromes all share is a set of non-specific symptoms, versions of which are familiar to all of us: dizziness, a racing heart, exhaustion, brain fog, muscle pain.

A couple of foundational ideas off the bat. 1. The racialized hierarchy of violence in the US is not a sliding scale of melanin. Anti-Black and anti-Native violence and extraction are foundational to the US in a way that no example of sexism or xenophobia matches. Antisemitism isn't materially foundational the same way (ie our economy is not as reliant on the violent extraction of Jewish labor) but socially, Anglo-Saxons have used anti-Jewish scapegoating as social glue since before there were even Jewish people in the British Isles, and they absolutely exported those tropes to the New World. There's 1000 years of tropes and stereotypes of the Jew as the dangerous Other that are embedded into our language, our pop culture, and our politics, possibly indelibly.

In media, Biddy was a static stereotype, replicated for at least seventy years. She was sexual, yet repulsive, memorable, yet deplorable, female, yet violent. Most of all she was funny and had the makings of a permanent persona. (Indeed, though lanky and thin, Amelia Bedelia, the beloved children’s book character first introduced in 1963 is arguably a Biddy for the early elementary school set, a continuation of all the red-haired maids before her, forever and ludicrously misapprehending instructions).
