From an interview: Gold Derby: This script was originally a writing sample for you to get work in TV, right? Katie Dippold: It was specifically for Parks and Recreation. The script was very different back then, but I think it gave [co-creator] Mike Schur an idea of my sense of humor, so I got it off of that. I worked there for Seasons 2, 3, and 4, but I kept revisiting this over the years. For some reason, I just kept getting pulled back to it. I think that initial version leaned too hard-comedy. I wanted to take the stakes and the tension and the horror seriously, and so l had to rip it apart and just keep brainstorming. It was kind of scary to rip it apart because for a while, nothing's working. Then eventually, once I got the character stories down and thought about where I wanted it to go, I started weaving the comedy back in.
