They, too, had masters of their own. He had wondered who actually pulled the strings from the top. Who was truly responsible for all the pain and suffering? One night, he got a glimpse of one of them. He sat in the shadows on a ledge in an abandoned section of the quilla, chewing warm meat while dark ichor dripped down his chin. His legs dangled from a cliff several floors above the ground. Suddenly he saw a dark silhouette fly down and land on the parapet on the opposite side. He had heard Dadu describe apsaras. Celestial nymphs who possessed unparalleled beauty, grace, and divine artistry. Carried by their majestic wings, the flying enchantresses would swoop down from the heavens to seduce the powerful sages whose intense meditation might threaten the gods’ supremacy. But the dark creature that descended before him now was no heavenly being. The ghastly form landed with an unnatural grace, its long coat billowing behind it, enormous wings flapping against the silver-touched clouds before touching down on the slate tiles with barely a whisper of sound. As it turned towards the castle, the silhouette took on a human-like appearance. But even across the length of the vast courtyard separating them, Ara could tell that it was anything but human. Slowly, its appearance warped. The wings disappeared, the hunched posture straightened, and it pulled back its long, clawed limbs, transforming them into something akin to human arms.
