Most of that week was taken up making sure Andria had a nice night while he was gone. He prepared one of her favorite meals, leaving it for when she got home from work. She made plans to go out with some friends she normally had to turn down. She was actually very upbeat at the prospect. And it wasn’t until the night before that Shawn started realizing that he was far more worried about how Andria would handle the evening than she was. “She knows you better than you think,” he remembered Rose advising. Maybe he underestimated how true that was. After nearly twenty years of thoroughly and intimately knowing each other, maybe his biggest mistake in this endeavor was not trusting his wife enough."

But after seeing him batter and shatter himself for so many people, and how each endeavor fundamentally changed him from then on, she could also see what he was trying to tell her. Because, in fact, the one thing that never altered was the way he’d smile at her like she was the most important person in the world; the way his hands holding her could melt away everything except the two of them. Or how hard he worked to always be there for her, even at the expense of things he held most dear. It codified in her mind in that moment: Shawn was like a river, always moving, never remaining the same. Except for his love for her. His love was constant, like a massive rock weathering the currents. Andria couldn’t think of any more words that’d be of much use. She leapt from her chair and rushed around the table to grab him as tight as she could. Her lips intertwined his, feeling the salt of a tear on her lips shared between them. The two rushed upstairs in a dizzy haze, making love until the sun set. Nobody remembered to put the sushi in the fridge.

Excerpt from The House on Polly Lane by M. Cooper - "At some point, well past midnight, Gina had a demand. It was the kind that only comes in a haze of liquor and lust. She needed a hot tub. Shawn and Andria explained that the apartments had several spread across the complex, but they’d all be locked up by this time. She couldn’t be deterred. With a mischievous smile, she ran out their door and down the stairs. It was like chasing a child who’d broken away from her parents. She scampered along the sidewalks, her bare feet lightly smacking against the cooling concrete. Shawn and Andria stumbled, chasing her as she giggled in revelry. Mischief was her natural state tonight, and Shawn desperately wanted to join her. He’d sputtered out half- remembered directions toward the complex’s hot tub, long-closed for the night. Much to his surprise, she was making her way flawlessly, even correctly turning where he’d realized he had told her the wrong way. She knew what she wanted, and it was as if she could sense its location in relation to her.
Excerpt from The House on Polly Lane by M. Cooper - His mind was spinning, desperate to make sense of what he was feeling. But instead he only had fragments of random notions, incompatible thoughts that just kept repeating like a song you only know several lines from, but can’t stop looping. And every loop circled back faster and faster until even the fragments were no longer comprehensible. It was just a mush of emotions that passed by so fast that none of them could be processed. Shawn had to calm down. He stopped under an old, haggard tree leaning over the path, hands on his waist, attempting to regain control of his racing mind. Breathe. It’s too hard; it’s not enough. Find the right breath. Strong and forceful. No, that’s making it worse. Long and drawn out? First breath seemed to work better, and then back into his spiral. He looked straight up, eyes closed tight, expecting to feel the sun on his face. But he didn’t. Opening his gaze, Shawn saw the thousands of budding leaves on the branches hovering above him, giving a crisp shade. Then his eyes focused on the single leaf, barely more than a baby, gripping its branch tenuously from the gusts of wind pulling at it. His shoulders slacked a little; his breaths came easier. And nothing existed in the universe beyond this one leaf, literally holding on for its very life. Everything calmed.
