Jasper was born in 1894 in Texarkana Arkansas. During his teens, he would play for minstrel shows as well as Wild West Revival shows. By 19, he was playing assorted percussion in Memphis. A bit later he collaborated with “Father of the Blues,” W.C Handy, as well as Jelly Roll Morton. In 1917 he relocated to Chicago, where he spent most of his career. During World War I, he played drums in the 365th Infantry Band in France. During the Great Depression, Taylor quit music altogether, becoming a cobbler for the next decade before returning to the stage in the 1940s. Jasper Taylor would remain a gigging drummer until his death in 1964.
Cole was born in 1926 in Texarkana, Texas. She graduated from high school at 17 and enrolled in what is now Prairie View A&M University. While in college, she started playing with all-girl and coed musical groups. In 1946, she quit school to become a professional drummer. Over the next quarter century, she toured all over the USA and to 14 other countries. She played with Duke Ellington, Nat King Cole, Ella Fitzgerald, and Tiny Davis’ Hell Divers. She was proud of having played at The Apollo Theater in New York. In 1971, after her musical partner Maurine Smith died, Helen moved back to Texas to finish her last year of college. She received recognition from state and nation alike for having a pioneering role as not only an African American musician, but a woman as well. Sadly, Helen Cole passed away in 2014, but only after a life well lived.

Hailing from Savannah Georgia, Danny got his start playing in clubs in Miami before relocating to the Bahamas. While there, he played in Calypso bands. After moving to New York City, probably his biggest gig came in 1965 when he played with Dizzy Gillespie. The next year, he played with Randy Weston at the famous Monterey Jazz Festival.
A graduate of UMBC with a degree in Music Education, Dan has been a drumming force to be reckoned with in the Baltimore area for over 20 years now. When we first met, we hit it off talking about metal drummers. Dan absolutely has metal chops, having played with metal bands Eternal Ruin and Eaten Alive. But one of the most impressive things about his playing is his range. In 2017, Dan recorded and released the EP Inner, with Baltimore indie band Yo No Say. I haven’t seen him in a long time, but Dan is an incredibly affable dude and one hell of a drummer.
Born in 1948, Linda has been a professional musician her entire adult life, beginning in the late 1960s. During the 1970s, she became a session musician and would go on to play drums and record vocals with Santana, Boz Scaggs, Lenny White, and more. In the early 1990s, she would form the Cultural Heritage Choir, celebrating the music of enslaved African Americans as well as traditional African music. The choir has performed all around the USA as well as in 13 other countries.
Wells was born in Kentucky in 1899. Little is known about his early life, but his family moved to Chicago in the early part of the century. Johnny is mostly known for playing with clarinet virtuoso Jimmie Noone. Wells joined Jimmie Noone’s band in 1927, serving as the house band for Chicago Jazz venue The Apex Club. The next year, they recorded and released 6 tracks. Their most famous two songs were “I Know that You Know” and “Sweet Sue.” Johnny was also an organizer and became an official in the Negro Musicians Union.
