Auch wenn sie das BIP deprimierten, indem sie Zeit mit ihren Kindern spielten, gelang es den Bewohnern Europas auch, die Ungleichheit relativ niedrig zu halten, während sie in den letzten 20 Jahren anderswo in die Höhe schoss. Niemand in Europa hat die letzte Woche damit verbracht, sich sein Aktienportfolio anzusehen und sich gefragt, ob er es sich noch leisten könnte, seine Kinder an die Universität zu schicken. Die Europäer haben keine Ahnung, was „medizinischer Konkurs“ ist. Oh, und kein EU-Führer hat jemals seine eigene Kryptowährung auf den Markt gebracht. Zusammengekauerte Massen: Haben Sie über Europa nachgedacht? Die Sache mit Europa ist, dass es naiv ist, der einzige globale Handelsbloo, der an moralische Normen gebunden ist. Sie besteht beispielsweise darauf, die Erlasse der Welthandelsorganisation einzuhalten oder ihren Teil zur Reduzierung der Kohlenstoffemissionen beizutun. Es ist kein Ort, der verlangt, dass Verbündete zu ihm kriechen und um „Gefälligkeiten“ bei Zöllen betteln. Die Sache mit Europa ist, dass es wie ein Freilichtmuseum ist, der Kontinent von gestern. Ist sein Modell überhaupt nachhaltig? Eine gute Frage - eine, die das europäische Modell voraussetzt, ist es wert, verteidigt zu werden. Es ist ein Ort, der mit begehbaren Städten, langen Lebenserwartungen und geimpften Kindern gesegnet ist, die nicht ausgebildet werden müssen, um Schulschützen auszuweichen. Das Reich Karls des Großen ist ein Ort mit vielen Fehlern, von denen viele anhalten. Aber auf ihre eigene Art und Weise haben die Europäer einen Ort geschaffen, an dem ihnen die Rechte auf das garantiert werden, wonach sich andere sehnen: Leben, Freiheit und das Streben nach Glück.
Doch für viele Europäer scheint die Idee, dass die Meinungsfreiheit bedroht ist, seltsam zu sein, dass Europäer fast alles sagen können, was sie wollen, sowohl in der Theorie als auch in der Praxis. Europas Universitäten wurden nie zu Brutstätten der Sprachpolizei durch die eine oder andere Rasse von Kulturkriegern. Sie können eine kontroverse Ansicht auf jedem europäischen Campus (zumindest außerhalb Ungarns) äußern, ohne befürchten zu müssen, Ihre Amtszeit oder Ihr Stipendium zu verlieren. Keine Haftanstalten warten auf ausländische Studenten, die falsche Ansichten über Gaza vertreten; Nachrichtenagenturen werden nicht verklagt, weil sie Oppositionspolitiker interviewt haben. Anwaltskanzleien sind nicht gezwungen, sich als Buße vor Präsidenten zu beugen, weil sie für ihre politischen Feinde gearbeitet haben. Die Sache mit Europa ist, dass es vor einer demografischen Krise steht. Sie weidet einen starken Bevölkerungsrückgang nur ab, indem sie ihre Arbeitskräfte mit Einwanderern unterstützt, von denen sich einige schlecht integriert haben. Eine solche Einwanderung zeigt die Attraktivität der europäischen Lebensweise; für diejenigen, die Zuflucht vor dem Krieg suchen, zeigt sie die Großzügigkeit der Europäer (manchmal fehlgeleitet). Und während Euro- Verantwortliche machen gelegentlich eine Show, wie sie gegen illegale Migranten vorgehen, sie verlassen sich im Allgemeinen auf legale, um ihre Ernten zu ernten. Die Sache mit Europa ist, dass seine Wirtschaft dauerhaft in der Flaute steckt, eine globale Warngeschichte. Und kein Wunder. Die Europäer genießen den August, gehen in ihrer Blütezeit in Rente und verbringen mehr Zeit mit Essen und Kontakten mit ihren Familien als die Einwohner jeder anderen Region. Seltsamerweise zeigen Umfragen, dass Menschen in reichen und armen Ländern eine solche Freizeit schätzen; irgendwie haben die Europäer es geschafft, ihre Arbeitgeber dazu zu bringen, ihnen mehr davon zu geben.
Die Konsensregel bedeutet auch, dass die gereizten politischen Tweets eines fehlgeleiteten Politikers - 125 % Zölle auf China, irgendwer? - nicht dazu führen, dass die globalen Aktienmärkte in eine Sackgasse geraten. Die Spitzenkandidaten der EU sind nicht gewählt und manchmal nicht rechenschaftspflichtig. Dennoch würden sie es nicht wagen, beim Golfspielen fotografiert zu werden, nachdem sie die Ersparnisse von Millionen ihrer Landsleute ausgelöscht haben. Die Sache mit Europa ist, dass es sich für die Verteidigung auszahlt und nicht genug für seine Streitkräfte ausgibt, um Bedrohungen im Alleingang abzuwehren. Dies wird noch lange gelten, auch wenn die Verteidigungsbudgets auf dem größten Teil des Kontinents erhöht werden. Aber es spiegelt auch ein anderes Verständnis dessen wider, was „Verteidigung“ bedeutet. Zum einen deutet niemand in Europa - zumindest außerhalb Russlands - auch nur beiläufig an, dass er in andere Länder einmarschieren wird. Es gibt keinen Brüsseler Witz darüber, einen unwilligen Nachbarn in „unseren 28. Staat“ zu verwandeln (im Gegenteil, viele der Nachbarn der EU wollen unbedingt dem Club beitreten). Europäische Vizepräsidenten fliegen auch nicht ungebeten an Orte, die sie annektieren wollen, unter dem Vorwand, dass ihr Ehepartner ein Schlittenrennen sehen möchte. Europa mag beim Geheimdienstsammeln gespart haben, aber seine verschiedenen Führer kennen die Identität des Angreifers, der die Kämpfe in der Ukraine initiiert hat (Hinweis: es ist nicht Uk-raine). Viele haben die Fallstricke der Invasion des Irak vor einiger Zeit vorhergesehen. Die Sache mit Europa ist, dass ihm eine absolutistische Bindung an die Meinungsfreiheit fehlt. Sehen Sie, wie Richter in Rumänien und Frankreich die Karrieren rechtsextremer Politiker zunichte gemacht haben, die sich selbst (mit wenig Beweisen) davon überzeugt haben, dass es eher ihre Ideologie als ihr Gesetzesbruch war, der sie in Schwierigkeiten gebracht hat.

Berge von Bürokratie und Strafsteuern bedeuten, dass es in Frankreich oder Deutschland keine Billionen-Dollar-Unternehmen gibt, die mit Amazon, Google oder Tesla mithalten können. Aber das ist nicht alles, was Europa fehlt. Ebenfalls abwesend auf dem Kontinent sind die Broligarchen, die auf solchen Giganten sitzen, von denen einige die Macht stärker im Griff haben als die Realität. Es gibt also keine europäischen Rasputins, die unzählige Millionen in politische Kampagnen pumpen und bei den Amtseinführungen der Führer oder ihren eigenen neu geschaffenen Regierungsabteilungen einen stolzen Platz bekommen. Es gibt leider nur wenige Einhörner in Europa und zu wenig Innovation. Allerdings gibt es absolut keine Tech-Führungskräfte, die in den sozialen Medien damit prahlen, ihre Wochenenden damit zu verbringen, Teile des Staates „in den Holzhacker“ zu füttern. Die Sache mit Europa ist, dass es unentschlossen ist, zu langsam zu handeln. Jede Krise erfordert mehrere Gipfeltreffen der nationalen Staats- und Regierungschefs der Europäischen Union, die oft bis spät in die Nacht geraten. Die langweiligen Prozesse der einvernehmlichen Herrschaft können die EU auf ein Kriechen bremsen: Es dauerte vier Tage und vier Nächte des Feilschens, um sich auf den letzten Siebenjahreshaushalt des Blocks im Jahr 2020 zu einigen. Andererseits schließt der europäische Staatsapparat nicht alle paar Jahre willkürlich ab, wenn sich eine politische Einigung über die Finanzierung als schwer fassbar erweist, so dass Millionen von öffentlichen Angestellten beurlaubt sind und grundlegende Dienstleistungen für Tage oder Wochen nicht verfügbar sind.

It is a place blessed with walkable cities, long life expectancies and vaccinated kids who do not need to be trained to dodge school shooters. Charlemagne's realm is a place of many flaws, lots of them enduring. But in their own plodding way, Europeans have created a place where they are guaranteed rights to what others yearn for: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
The thing about Europe is that it is facing a demographic crisis. It is staving off a sharp decline in population only by shoring up its workforce with immigrants, some of whom have integrated poorly. Such immigration shows the appeal of the European way of life; for those who come seeking refuge from war, it shows Europeans' generosity (sometimes misguided). And while Euro- peans occasionally make a show of cracking down on illegal mi-grants, they generally rely on legal ones to pick their crops. The thing about Europe is its economy is permanently stuck in the doldrums, a global cautionary tale. And no wonder. Europeans enjoy August off, retire in their prime and spend more time eating and socialising with their families than inhabitants of any other region. Oddly, surveys show people in countries both rich and poor value such leisure time; somehow Europeans managed to squeeze their employers into giving them more of it. Even as they were depressing GDP by wasting time playing with their kids, the denizens of Europe also managed to keep inequality relatively low while it ballooned elsewhere in the past 20 years. Nobody in Europe has spent the past week looking at their stock portfolio, wondering if they could still afford to send their kids to university. Europeans have no idea what "medical bankruptcy" is. Oh, and no EU leader has ever launched their own cryptocurrency. Huddled masses: have you considered Europe? The thing about Europe is it is naive, the only global trading bloo attached to moral norms. It insists on complying with the edicts of the World Trade Organisation, say, or doing its part to cut carbon emissions. It is not a place that demands allies come crawling to it begging for "favours" on tariffs.
The thing about Europe is it freeloads on defence, not spending enough on its armed forces to single-handedly fend off threats. This will continue to be true for a long time, even as defence budgets are hiked across most of the continent. But it also reflects a different understanding of what "defence" means. For one, nobody in Europe - outside Russia, at least - is even casually implying they will invade other countries. There is no Brussels quip about turning an unwilling neighbour into "our 28th state" (on the contrary, many of the EU's neighbours are desperate to join the club). Nor do European vice-presidents fly uninvited to places they are seeking to annex, on the pretext that their spouse wants to watch a sledge race. Europe may have scrimped on intelligence-gathering, but its various leaders do know the identity of the aggressor who initiated the fighting in Ukraine (hint: it is not Uk-raine). Many foresaw the pitfalls of invading Iraq a while back. The thing about Europe is that it lacks an absolutist attachment to free speech. See how judges in Romania and France derailed the careers of hard-right politicians, who have convinced themselves (with little evidence) that it was their ideology rather than their lawbreaking that got them in trouble. Yet to many Euro peans the idea that free expression is under threat seems odd Europeans can say almost anything they want, both in theory and in practice. Europe's universities never became hotbeds of speech-policing by one breed of culture warrior or the other. You can express a controversial view on any European campus (outside Hungary, at least) without fear of losing your tenure or your grant. No detention centres await foreign students who hold the wrong views on Gaza; news outfits are not sued for interviewing opposition politicians. Law firms are not compelled to kow-tow to presidents as penance for having worked for their political foes.

Mounds of red tape and punitive taxes mean there are no trillion-dollar entrepreneurial ventures in France or Germany to match Amazon, Google or Tesla. But that is not all Europe is lacking. Also absent from the continent are the broligarchs who sit atop such behemoths, some of whom have a tighter grip on power than on reality. There are thus no European Rasputins pumping untold millions into political campaigns, getting pride of place at leaders' inaugurations or their own new-minted government departments to run. There are few unicorns in Europe, alas, and too little innovation. That said, there are absolutely no tech executives boasting on social media of spending their weekends feeding bits of the state "into the wood chipper". The thing about Europe is that it is indecisive, too slow to act. Every crisis requires multiple summits of the European Union's national leaders, often quibbling late into the night. The boring processes of rule by consensus can slow the EU to a crawl: it took four days and four nights of haggling to agree on the bloc's latest seven-year budget, in 2020. Then again, the European state apparatus does not arbitrarily shut down every few years when political agreement over funding proves elusive, leaving millions of public employees on furlough and basic services unavailable for days or weeks. Consensus rule also means that the petulant policy tweets of one misguided politician—125% tariffs on China, anyone?-do not result in global stockmarkets being sent into a tailspin. The EU's top brass are unelected and sometimes unaccountable. Still, they would not dare be photographed playing a round of golf after having wiped out the savings of millions of their compatriots.

Bolsonaro's cultists? Elon's "genius" hot takes? They're designed to addict you to outrage. Instead of refreshing headlines: Protest strategically. Attend one rally a week. Scream your pain. Demand justice. Then leave. Replace doomscrolling with action. Train yourself to think: "Will this headline change how I pipette tomorrow?" If not, close the tab. Protect your joy. Read a paper, troubleshoot an experiment, or just... breathe. 4. Your sanity is non-negotiable. Tlost years to anger and anxiety. Don't make my mistake. Find your "chains" and break them: unfollow toxic accounts, mute family group chats, and block anyone who dismisses your humanity. Final thought: The best "fuck you" to fascists? Thriving. Publish that paper. Build that collaboration. Laugh with labmates. Science outlives dictators-but only if we stay in the fight
