Instead of trying to earn more votes, Republican officials across the South are executing a systematic effort to dismantle Black political representation in Congress through gerrymandering. It's time for broad reforms to end this kind of gerrymandering for good.

Why not proportional representation instead of First Past The Post?

Stop trying to BALANCE already. TAKE control of the majority. Democrats are the majority!!!! Only 33% of the voting public want MAGA/GOP and yet they win because they cheat and the democrats allow them to do so over and over. Take back power, close loopholes, and ensure fairness is written into law!

It seems to me that the USA ought to be taking this latest onslaught on democracy a bit more seriously. If it succeeds, there won’t be another opportunity for anyone to put it right, short of revolution. It makes my grumbling at Trump’s impact so far pale into insignificance.

The plan was diabolical. If you can’t win the votes, just eliminate the ones you can’t win. It is amazing that their plan is working, thanks to the handpicked SC. 🤨

I wish the dems would learn from this playbook and swing far left. Quit running to the middle to placate the Dixie party. It's not gonna work. At this point, the left is so far right, they're negotiating over control of ice instead of punching the nazis. 🤦♂️ Sad...

How fucked up is it that gerrymandering is still a thing in 2026. These are cheating tactics first used in 1788!

They don't want more votes. If they could eliminate almost all voting, they would. The Republican ethos (unstated most of the time but never absent) is, ordinary voters don't know what's good for the country and can't be permitted to interfere with the decisions of those who do know. The fact

Given what the Confederacy is doing to our elections, it seems dubious to have ever trusted that any of them properly counted the presidential election votes. There’s no longer any trust in our country, even in basic election results. It doesn’t seem sustainable for a “union” to go on like that.

Forgive me for being pessimistic, but Virginia voted to redistrict and was overturned by their Supreme Court. So, why isn't Louisiana's being overturned for throwing out thousands of votes in a primary/early voting? We know the answer: Rules for thee but not for me.

Step 1. Pack the supreme court. 9 people? Way too much concentrated power. How about 27? Or more? 9 also cannot keep up with the load. step 2. Remove their lifetime appointments. (18 years) Step 3. Investigate them all and impeach and prosecute any guilty. Step 4. Reforms.

Completely for this. But also: I learned in school that districts are drawn just once, after each census? That had it’s own problems, but at least it wasn’t a free-for-all prior to each election, as it will be now. That was just another “norm”?

Saw Pete's CNN appearance. Absolutely loved his talk on the "Montana Plan" (Initiative I-194), where the MON is trying to take a "Novel Legal Approach" (DEMS Proj 2025 Counter Punch) to SCOTUS Citiziens United. MON will define, in law, what a Person is based on their State's Rights to exclude Corps.

Let's also remember the millions of (white) voters who elected those Republican officials, and are very happy with what they are doing. I don't see many white people in the southern states complaining about this, and all it does is reinforce the belief of how racist these people truly are.

If you draw a weird squiggly district to ensure a representative is black (and let's not kid ourselves, therefore Democrat), that is gerrymandering and it invites more Republican gerrymandering. All of it erodes trust in American democracy in a dangerous way.

Yes, we need some type of proprtional representation. There are fair and sound ways to do this while still keeping district representation, we just need to get away from either 1-rep-per-district or 1st-past-the-post.

There's absolutely 0 reason why we should have an electoral college in this day and age as well. When Dems take back power, this needs to be the first thing we abolish. 1 person, 1 vote. This is how most voting procedurals work.

Buttigieg is one of the most wholesome, honest, and smart Democrats we have. I know for a fact he'd make an outstanding and fair POTUS. He makes his points very clearly and in a non-condescending manner, and he's truthful.
Kate · May 17
Politically motivated gerrymandering is taxation without representation. It’s what we fought the revolutionary war to escape. Instead of us choosing our representatives, they’re choosing us. Needs to be outlawed. Redraw districts only once every 10years and base it on population numbers by committee
Hagen Patrick · May 17
Good luck getting these desperate Republicans to go along with it until the Democrats are in power.
JoseCNY · May 17
With the digital data today, why not let a software/AI tool design districts with some simple bipartisan rules, such as: 1. Contiguous area, that is as close to a circle, square or rectangle as possible 2. Keep localities (villages, towns, cities, etc.) in the same district to the extent possible
NestorRiveraG · May 17
Pete, nice message, but you know perfectly well fundamental reason why this happens: legalized gerry’ing is THE last throws of the tyranny of merit funded by Citizens United. WE know YOU know that if legislators end CitzU, gerrymandering 💰 train implodes thereafter. CitzU is a cause, GM’s a symptom.
InsaneChihuahua · May 17
If republicans' ideas were worth anything, they wouldn't have to cheat. If republicans told the truth about their ideas, they would receive many fewer votes. If republicans could win honestly, they wouldn't keep trying to take voting rights from women, minorities, LGBTQ, college kids, etc.

@f1nance.bsky.social · May 17
This is a bad framing because it isn’t quite true and most people know it. They are gerrymandering and it will disenfranchise black people, but it’s not about race. It’s about gaining power without needing to persuade voters and black people are collateral damage.
