The average SST over the extra-polar ocean (60°S–60°N) for June 2026 was the highest on record for the month, at 20.86°C. This the first time in 2026 that the daily and monthly SSTs for 60°S–60°N have exceeded the corresponding levels of 2024 and reached record levels for the time of year.
