White background with text, statement from Peter Khalil MP: The Islamophobic attacks on two young Muslim women in separate incidents in Epping last week are vile and unacceptable. The Government will continue to call out and stand against all forms of hate regardless of ethnic or faith background. Police are taking this seriously and are investigating the incidents as prejudice-motivated attacks. Perpetrators should face the full force of the law. Muslim Australians have the right to go about their day in peace and safety, but we have seen a 510% increase in Islamophobic incidents reported to the Islamophobic Register, and Islamophobic incidents are likely underreported as many Muslims – particularly women – feel they may not be taken seriously. Our multicultural and multifaith society is one of Australia’s greatest strengths, and we must do all we can to uphold and strengthen it.
