His eyes were drawn to the window when he noticed a summoning circle in the sky, its light shining through the dark rain clouds nearby. It's showtime, Rufus thought, silently parroting the words that woman had mouthed at him, while he glanced over at the clock, which read 1730 just as expected. He merely finished off the last of his champagne and returned the empty flute to the table while a Bahamut suddenly swooped down out of the clouds, barely giving the Turks enough time to curse and sound the alarm before it slammed into the glass wall of the hotel, opposite where he sat. The deafening sounds of glass shattering and people screaming rang out, along with the roars of the dragon as it dug its talons into the marbled floor and snapped its massive jaws at anything that moved within its reach. While everybody else except the Turks panicked and ran past him towards the elevators and staircase, Rufus calmly reached his left hand under the table and grabbed his duffel bag, which he swung over his shoulder as he rose from his seat and watched the chaos unfold around him. Good, the more chaotic, the more believable, so long as he played his part well enough, Rufus thought as he looked over his right shoulder at his father, who was already being escorted out of the room by Verdot and Tseng. He bit his tongue when that act of care went unreturned, yet it didn't surprise him one bit; after all, it's not like he didn't have plenty of bastard spares to replace him with… Speaking of which… “Reno, Rude, find Solara and take her to a safe house,” Rufus ordered, refusing to walk in his father's shoes when it came to his own heir. “I'll handle the dragon,” he added with a smirk on his face as he reached his right hand into his coat and pulled out his shotgun, which was fully loaded just for this occasion.
"Who are you?” Alexander tried again with a different question as he slowly kneeled on the scorched ground, so that he was now at his level; that used to work on the stray animals he befriended in the other world, so maybe it would work on this stray child as well? The strange boy glared at him, tense and wary, but there was a hint of surprise in his blue eyes, and dare he say, hope? Seconds passed as Alexander waited with bated breath until, finally, those curled lips slowly relaxed and covered his sharp teeth once more, and then a moment later, a voice replaced the growl as the other child answered him with two softly spoken syllables: a name. “Vergil.” “Oh? Like the Divine Comedy?” Alexander said, replying swiftly yet just as softly as he recalled one of the books he had checked out from his favorite library, which was one of the few things on Earth he missed. He had picked that book because of the title, but unfortunately it wasn’t as funny as he had thought it would be, and it didn’t have nearly as many pictures as he would have liked. However, he still remembered the name of the old guy in it, who had reminded him of the White Rabbit in his favorite book.

"Ah, I knew I was forgetting something!” the White Rabbit said, snapping his fingers after he opened the trunk of his car and saw a blond-haired man inside it, who resembled a roasted pig as he was hogtied and gagged with some items that his partner had vetoed in the bedroom. The day had been so eventful that he had truly forgotten that he had caught this idiot snooping around his apartment building a few hours ago and had set him aside someplace safe until he could take him to the market; with a man as big and muscular as he was, he’d surely fetch a fair price for one reason or another. “Isaac, wasn’t it? Meet Gilver; he’s going to be your travel buddy for a little while.” Gilver didn’t make a peep as the White Rabbit lifted his unconscious body from where he had dropped him on the ground and stuffed him into the trunk, positioning him next to the burly man like a little spoon; it was a tight and awkward fit, but the White Rabbit had always been good at playing Tetris, if he did say so himself! After all, breaking high records was one of the reasons why he himself had gotten shoved into lockers and other odd places by the other kids in his foster home—who’d thought that getting bullied as a kid would make you a better kidnapper as an adult?
“It’s rare for either of us to take such an interest in somebody.” His attention returned to Andrea, who had gotten close enough to whisper that comment into his left ear from behind him. “Why don't you go ask her for a dance?” Genesis shivered as he felt strong hands take hold of his hips, which provoked a rush of heat to an area not far from them. “You say that as if you’d rather I spend the rest of the night dancing with her than you,” He whispered back as he pressed his back against the other man’s broad chest and tilted his head to the side. A curious thought of what it would be like to have her lips caressing his exposed neck right now instead of Andi’s familiar ones crossed his mind as he watched Aranea chatting with a couple of her friends. That thought was soon driven from his mind by a spark of unpleasant pain when those lips got a bit too close to his injured shoulder, which made Genesis pull away from him. “I’m going to be too busy to entertain you tonight, so you might as well enjoy the aftershow with somebody else,” Andrea replied, neither seeming to mind the sudden loss of contact nor questioning the reason for it; That was something Genesis had always appreciated about his friend-with-benefits, rather spoken verbally or not, Andrea always obeyed ‘No’ or ‘Stop’ without question. “And besides, I wouldn't be opposed to you inviting her to join us sometime.”

Out of the corner of his eye, Vergil saw something that made him falter: without any hesitation or mercy, the White Rabbit had taken down one of the sapiens and was stabbing the corpse over and over and over—until finally, the crystallized sword couldn’t handle the force of his attacks any longer and shattered into hundreds of red shards. A chill went down Vergil’s spine as he watched the White Rabbit collapse atop the corpse from the momentum of his last attack, grinning and giggling in sadistic glee before he hopped back onto his feet and summoned another sword to his blood-soaked hand. “Pace yourself, Rabbit!” Vergil called out to him as he looked at the White Rabbit’s chest, where his device was visible through the white cloth covering it, glowing even brighter than the eyes of his handmade Devil Arm as the two inventions complemented each other. His own eyes lingered on the device, trying to estimate the level of his Blood Gauge by how brightly it glowed red; with every blade summoned and shattered, blood was lost, and should he run out of blood in his device, stalemated he would be until it was either refilled—one way or another—or his heart gave out on him. However, Vergil’s concerned words fell on deaf ears as the White Rabbit threw himself back into the fray with reckless abandon, which resulted in the sound of more screaming, more giggling, and more cracking as the White Rabbit pushed his newest Blood Blade closer and closer to its breaking point with every overzealous attack. A frustrated noise escaped from Vergil’s lips; Dammit, they had neither demons to spare as fuel nor another gold orb to revive the fool.
“Oh dear, I can’t leave you alone in this world for an hour, can I?” The White Rabbit said, amusement coating every word like the foul substances that coated Vergil's coat as he lay blackout drunk; apparently, somebody had dragged him out of the bar and tossed him into a pile of garbage. The White Rabbit would have poked him with Yamato if he had it, but alas, his partner's sword was nowhere to be seen, along with his watch and his clothes. Indeed, the only thing left on him was the dirty bandages around his head; well, at least whoever stripped him of his belongings had the decency to leave his identity concealed, the White Rabbit thought as he settled for nudging him with his shoe. Vergil didn’t make a sound or move an inch, which prompted the White Rabbit to pause in his amusement and stare at his bare chest, holding his own breath until he saw his partner take one of his own. “Still alive? Of course you are,” the White Rabbit said, echoing an earlier statement he had made, but this time, he was relieved that was the case, for this was one idiot he wanted to keep around.
