That is purely because they (the industry) just follow trends in language and communication. It's called a heat pump because it moves energy from A to B, it 'pumps' it. It doesn't matter if it is to a specific destination or away from it.
This is just a commercial bastardization of the term. It’s just categorically false. A heat pump water heater is simply an air conditioner bolted to a tank of water. So why do we call that a heat pump but we don’t call an air conditioner a heat pump?
