First of the Month is an online journal of the radical imagination that eschews correct lines and lets argument breathe. First aims for (what Kenneth Burke termed) “perspective by incongruity.” The idea is to publish (and juxtapose) pieces that upend conventional wisdom and flip intellectual coordinates. Novelist Russell Banks’ (relatively) recent testimonial speaks to what makes First unique (or, in the words of an Inside Higher Ed review: “singularly lively, and no less strange”): Thanks for the new issue of “First of the Month.” I wonder why it’s taken me so long to find this publication…I like the feeling, when reading “First,” that I’m in a roomful of intelligent, quarrelsome, open-minded, open-hearted humanists. Of course, it’s helpful to be able now and then to step outside for a smoke while I figure out where I myself happen to stand on Charlie Hebdo, race/class, Black Lives Matter, etc., etc.
