Blogatog poast from May 9 of this year that reads: "A birthday trivia request: Anything on Phelddagrifs beyond "the name is an anagram"?

(bonus question: since squirrels, the previous "too silly for black border" creature type is now in, can we expect a third phelddagrif any time soon?)

One of the running jokes in R&D was one day we’d make a purple hippo. So, when they named a card after Richard, the proper execution of the joke was to make it a purple hippo.

I’m skeptical of a third Pheddagrif happening. Sorry.

The story behind Phelddagrif is this: While getting his Ph.D, Richard Garfield invented the first trading card game. Magic: the Gathering was play tested by fellow students at University of Pennsylvania and later developed at Wizards of the coast. The game's success was clear when the 2.5 million card print run sold out at Gen Con '93.
The game's success inspired expansions, some created by a group called the "East Coast Playtesters", who would design both Ice Age and Alliances. Ice Age told the story of Terisiare after the Brother's war, with the Golgothian Sylex altering the planet's climate leading to an "Ice Age".
The Ice Age ended when the planeswalker, Freyalise, cast "The World Spell" and then the story continued or something.
Freyalise was initially named "Phelddagrif", a subtle anagrammatic nod to the creator of the game "Garfield PhD" (Marketing loved mentioning the PhD at the time)
But, the continuity director at the time had some questions about the the nature goddess planeswalker being named "Phelddagrif" on play test cards for winds of phelddagrif (and this possible Altar of Bone) saying it sounded like "some kind of flying purple hippo!"(The Lexicon Archive 1/15/2002
This story is a bit different from the one that Mark Rosewater commonly tells his Drive to work podcast (most recently on "Episode 1359: Being a Magic Artist" that early magic designers had a joke that Magic kept making new things and would eventually make a flying purple hippo
This is to say that the story behind Phelddagrif is muddled, much like Questing Phelddagrif's story: I've some say the card was a farewell to Richard Garfield leaving Wizards of the Coast to be an independent game designer. It's also a reference to the multicolor/tri-color cards of Ice Age block.
