How could computer science—a discipline that began with vacuum tubes and transistors, with programming by switches and punched cards; that slowly rose from binary language to today’s zoo of programming languages and paradigms; that along the way invented compilation, interpretation, just-in-time compilation, the Von Neumann architecture, memory hierarchies, branch prediction and countless other hardware tricks, dynamic, distributed, parallel, and real-time programming, as well as a thousand other concepts of astonishing sophistication and elegance, how could computer science, I ask, have mutated into this cult of generative or agentic AI worshippers, where, in closed circles, people pass around the recipes for steering the beast toward the desired outcome? [...] But how can an ordinary computer scientist succumb to the siren call of agentic AI? Is its song so irresistible that it drives them to abandon, in an instant, all their hard-won skills in software design and engineering, transforming themselves into a mere novice in the faith of agentic AI, whose sole aspiration is to become a high priest through the ceaseless study of the grimoires in which the sect’s incantations are meticulously recorded?

What Is Vibe Coding Paralysis? Vibe coding paralysis is the syndrome of wanting to do so much — and being able to do so much — that you end up finishing nothing. It looks like this: You start a feature. Claude Code scaffolds it in minutes. While it's running, you think of another improvement. You spin up a new worktree, kick off a background task. Now you have two things in flight. A third idea hits. Why not? Another worktree. An hour later, you have five worktrees, three half-implemented features running in parallel, and you can't remember what the original task was. You feel behind. You prompt more. You re-plan. You re-prompt. The re-planning feels productive. It isn't. The paradox: the more capability you have, the more you feel compelled to use it. The more you use it, the more fragmented your attention becomes. The more fragmented your attention, the less you actually ship.

Prior studies have found mixed results on whether AI helps or hinders coding productivity. Our own research found that AI can reduce the time it takes to complete some work tasks by 80%—a result that may seem in tension with the findings presented here. But the two studies ask different questions and use different methods: our earlier observational work measured productivity on tasks where participants already had the relevant skills, while this study examines what happens when people are learning something new. It is possible that AI both accelerates productivity on well-developed skills and hinders the acquisition of new ones, though more research is needed to understand this relationship.
