People talk about sexual abuse, about physical abuse, about emotional abuse. Largely absent from the discourse around childhood trauma is school trauma. Very few people register that school can be a place of chronic, sustained trauma for children; can lead to complex PTSD, and that a traumatic time spent at school can and does break people. It is time to make our schools more holistic, more nurturing; it is time to prize students' wellbeing more highly. It is not good enough that parents are expected to send their children into a lottery from which they might not come out intact. And it is even more shocking that nobody talks about this.
