Positive vibes time. My partner and I mentor an all-girls FIRST Robotics competition team. The first all-girls robotics team representing public schools in the state of Ohio. This weekend was our regional competition in Cleveland. Our goal was to do better than we did last year in Cleveland and better than we did earlier this year at another tournament in NY. We achieved both goals. Not only that, a sister-team of ours got pulled as a backup team in the finals, and ended up ranking 2nd in the tournament. Not only that, but one of the students that I helped mentor for his Deans List Award interviews got onto the finalists list (one of two students who did out of a few dozen that applied) and is now going to Worlds. I’ve probably spent 20+ hours a week since the beginning of January mentoring these high school students, and I’m so FUCKING proud of each and every one of them. They’ve overcome so many hurdles, so many challenges. It’s absolutely not fair that they are playing the same game but with different rules as everyone else, but each and every one of them shows up to practice with a smile on their face and dedication in their hearts to get the job done and build a goddamn robot. I have cried multiple times this weekend. It’s fucking worth it. If you’re looking for some volunteer work to do, I would HIGHLY recommend FIRST robotics. It’s genuinely one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done in my life.
