I disagree with these being seen as "real games" because they are "sanitized, easily digestible and fully monetized" Garry's Mod, one of the examples, outright disproves this claim. Counter-Strike itself too, arguably (or at least 1.6, the final version of the 'mod').

Take for instance 'I Wanna Be The Guy' or 'Postal'. They are most absolutely considered real games that are important to the medium's history. And yet they're neither of the things claimed above, either.
