PANEL 1: Description: Edward III's family tree Narration: In fourteenth century England, the king's line of succession was determined by the law of agnatic primogeniture, whereby the eldest son (or male relative through the male line) would inherit the throne, as dictated by the vertical line of succession rather than the horizontal line of succession. PANEL 2: Description: A young Richard II sat on his throne being fawned over by his mother and half sisters, while two guards whisper about him. Narration: Consequently, the Black Prince's ten-year-old son Richard was crowned king, instead of one of Edward III's other surviving offspring. Growing up as the sole heir to the throne, it's a fair assumption that Richard had been wrapped in the proverbial cotton wool, and probably a bit spoiled... Joan of Kent: "My Dicky Wicky* is all grown up! Everyone - come and look at Dicky Wicky in his crown!" Sister 1: "Ooooooh! Doesn't he look smart in his robes!" Sister 2: "Aww bless!" Knight: "I'm not convinced that this has been the best piece of succession planning..." Footnote: *There is no evidence to suggest that Joan of Kent ever referred to her son as 'Dicky Wicky'... PANEL 3: Description: Richard II being introduced to a sceptical Parliament. Narration: The young king's sense of self-importance was further inflated upon his introduction to Parliament... Archbishop: "And just as God delivered unto us his only son, so doth Edward bequeath us Richard." PANEL 4: Description: Richard pondering Narration: Richard seemed to take this literally... Richard: "Hmmm... He can only mean one thing..." PANEL 4: Description: Richard realising Richard: "I am the Messiah!!!"
PANEL 1: Description: A group of archers firing arrows across St Albans Market place at the King's retinue Narration: The Earl of Warwick's soldiers have snuck past the town's defences and caught King Henry VI's entourage by surprise, attacking them as they rested and relaxed in the market place... The first battle was underway in what would come to be known as the Wars of the Roses... But how did we get here? PANEL 2: Description: 2 soldiers with swords, both wearing giant rose costumes (one as a red rose, and one as a white rose). They have stopped fighting and are questioning their life choices. Narration: Perhaps more importantly, what even were the Wars of the Roses? When did they take place? Who fought in them? And why did they happen? Knight: "Remind me again — why are we doing this?" PANEL 3: Description: Map showing locations of Lancaster and York, with an accompanying red and white rose, respectively. Narration: An overly simplistic view is that the conflict involved a violent struggle for the throne of England between two families — the house of Lancaster (signified by a red rose) and the house of York (signified by a white rose) — that took place over a thirty-year period from 1455 to 1485. But this wasn't a dispute between lancashire and Yorkshire. Instead, the what, when, who, why and how are much more complicated than this...
