TRANS Timeline of Fighting for Trans Migrant Justice 2014-2015: The Beginning • Familia TQLM Founded (2014): Familia: Trans Queer Liberation Movement forms to address issues affecting trans and queer Latinx immigrants. • Santa Ana Jail Protest (May 2015): Activists demand the release of trans women in immigration detention at Santa Ana City Jail in California. • First Sit-in at ICE (July 2015): Activists, including Jennicet Gutiérrez, disrupt an ICE office in Santa Ana to demand an end to trans detention. • Obama Administration Pressure: The campaign gains momentum, putting public pressure on ICE to release trans detainees. 2016-2017: Shutting Down Santa Ana • Santa Ana Trans Pod Closure (2016): After continued activism, the Santa Ana City Jail ends its contract with ICE, shutting down its trans detention pod. • Escalation Under Trump (2017): ICE expands trans detention at facilities like Cibola County Correctional Center in New Mexico, despite known abuses. 2018-2019: Fighting for Trans Migrants • Hunger Strikes & Protests (2018): Trans detainees in Cibola stage hunger strikes demanding medical care and an end to inhumane conditions. • Death of Roxsana Hernández (May 2018): Trans woman seeking asylum from Honduras dies in ICE custody due to medical neglect, sparking nationwide outrage. • Rally at ICE Headquarters (June 2019): Familia and allies protest in D.C. demanding justice for Rosana and an end to trans detention. 2020-2021: Major Wins • Release of Trans Detainees (2020-2021): Due to sustained advocacy and legal challenges, ICE is forced to release several trans women in detention. • Cibola Trans Unit Closure (January 2021): ICE closes the trans pod at Cibola County Correctional Center following years of advocacy and reports of mistreatment. 2022-2024: Ongoing Advocacy • Demands for Biden Administration Action (2022-2023) • March on Washington (2024)
