Your phrase here, "[the looped version] is probably easier to read and understand," should be read daily by those who religiously insist on avoiding loops.
The having fun part is all that matters - I'm never going to get on any leaderboards, or win prizes for the simplicity and elegance of my code :) But it works, and I enjoy getting there.
I love your clean code screenshots! Are you just taking screenshots of your editor, or is there some package or add-on you're using for generating these?
