The first hurling tournament of 2025 took place this weekend, hosted by Tampa Bay GAA! Teams from across the USA made their way to sunny Florida for the Suncoast 7’s Tournament. The weekend kicked off with the tournament’s traditional sunset beach poc around on Friday evening, followed by 7-a-side hurling and camogie matches on Saturday.
Hurling is a fast-paced Irish stick sport, the world’s fastest field sport, with the sliotar being hit up to 112 mph. It’s Ireland’s national sport and played globally, with 200+ clubs in North America. The women’s version, camogie, is similar but with slight rule differences. A hurling match features two teams of 15, playing two 35-minute halves. The goal: score by sending the ball through an H-shaped goalpost—1 point through the uprights or 1 goal (worth 3 points) into the net. You can: ✅ Hit or strike the ball ✅ Solo run or hand pass ✅ Sideline cut You cannot: ❌ Direct hits to players ❌ Stick checks ❌ Picking the ball off the ground The stick is called a hurl (or hurley), and the ball, a sliotar (“slit-er”), resembles a hard-stitched baseball.
