In 1903, Simon Newcomb - a professor of mathematics at Johns Hopkins and probably the most credentialed scientist in the country - wrote a widely-read essay arguing that powered heavier-than-air flight was a practical impossibility. And on December 17 of that same year, Wilbur and Orville Wright flew four times at Kitty Hawk. The longest flight lasted 59 seconds and covered 852 feet. Newcomb never revised his position. Pessimism is more accurate in the short term - almost always, I'll give it that. Things do go wrong in roughly the ways people predict they will. But optimism is more productive over decades. Some have cheap American flags draped over the side, and others are painted a bland ecru, a flimsy attempt at fading into the background. In compute hubs like Loudoun County, trees have been chopped down and high-voltage transmission towers put up. Mazes of power lines hang over roads like steel cobwebs."

Calling the Global Thai initiative a success would be the understatement of the century. In the two decades since the program launched, the number of Thai restaurants worldwide has more than tripled, jumping from roughly 5,500 in 2002 to well over 17,000 as of January 2024. In the United States, the presence of Thai restaurants has expanded by 250 percent in the same time frame, swelling from approximately 2,000 to just under 7,000. With only 300,000 Thai-Americans living in the States, the country's cuisine accounts for the highest population-to-restaurant ratio of any cultural group.

Your daily life will feel more controllable and legible than it does now. Nearly everything will feel more personalized to you, ready for you whenever you need it, in just the way you like it. This won't be because of one big thing, but because of unfathomable numbers of intelligent actions taken by computers that have learned how to use com-puters. Every product you buy, every device you use, every service you employ, will be brought to you by trillions of computers talking to themselves and to one another, making decisions, exercising judgments, pursuing goals.
