Although I like Ys VIII pretty well, the only part of it I find really excellent is the ending. More than anything, though, I wish 9 and 10 didn't use 8 as the basis for a formula like why does Ys IX bring back the tower defense bits I'm also not the biggest fan of how both 9 and 10 basically recreate the island from 8 where the population grows as you rescue people and everyone unlocks some kind of gameplay function. It's fine in 8, but it feels awkward and forced in 9 and 10 It feels especially silly how everyone you rescue in Ys X becomes part of the ship's crew. I think it would be a much better game if the ship had a smaller crew and most of the auxiliary characters were just taken to safety when you rescue them It feels like the only reason it's designed like that is force of habit; it's what they did in 8 and 9, so this one should also work like this
Favorite games of 2024: 1) Shiren the Wanderer: The Mystery Dungeon of Serpentcoil Island 2) Unicorn Overlord 3) Lorelei and the Laser Eyes If I had a list of my 100 or so favorite games ever, these three would all be in it somewhere. Cool game but I accidentally put it down at some point and there are dozens of hours left in it, oops: Metaphor: ReFantazio Game that I love but feels like it shouldn't be grouped together with the above since it's a free-to-play gacha live service thing: Zenless Zone Zero Games that didn't come out in 2024 but I got around to them in 2024 and they're cool: Crystar This one in particular would go somewhere in my list of all-time favorite games if I had such a list Alan Wake Game that would probably be in the above list but I started it in December and haven't finished it yet: Crymachina Games from 2024 that are fine but not good enough to be on the list: Haunted Castle Revisited You can tell this game was made by M2 because it's competent in every way, yet not at all interesting. It will go down in history as one of the Castlevania games of all time. Touhou Genso Wanderer: Foresight As the biggest Genso Wanderer Reloaded fan, I'm especially crestfallen that Foresight just isn't good. It also didn't help that Shiren 6, a dramatically better game in the same genre, came out a month earlier. Ys X: Nordics Ys Seven came out 15 years ago, and I'm still waiting for a new Ys that isn't just that game with manual camera control and worse boss fights. Ys X is a step in the right direction, and certainly better than the last few in that regard, but would have benefited immensely by inheriting fewer ideas from Ys VIII.
