Caption: PRODUCER WANGER MAKES HER WELCOME Geraldine Fitzgerald, one of the most talent-full of Hollywood actresses, has been visiting Universal Studios for the past several months as the "guest star" of walter Wanger who presents her in his "Ladies Courageous," movie telling the story of the WASPS (Women's Airforce Service Pilots). Costarred with Loretta Young and with such "regulars" of the Universal lot as Anne Gwynne, Evelyn Ankers, June Vincent and Lois Collier featured, the picturé is pretty much an all-feminine affair. However, Phillip Terry, David Bruce, Frank Jenks and Richard Fraser did manage to get into the cast. From: Universal Studios, Universal City, Calif.
Excerpt of Louella Parsons column, July 11, 1940: Ida Lupino got the jitters at the last minute and didn't show up to hear the preview audience applaud her big scene in “They Drive by Night." I repeat what I said in my review—Ida is as good in this picture as Bette Davis at her best, which only goes to prove that some excellent actresses need only to change studios to get a new lease on life. Certainly Para didn't do much with the little Lupino when she was under contract there but here's the laugh, after her fine performance last night the old home lot is trying to borrow her from Warners to play in "I Want Wings." If I know my movies many more studios will be after Ida.

Motion Picture, May 1935 "Roberta" (RKO-Radio) is the latest invitation to the dance with the stunning team of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. These two! Their comedy is as nimble as their feet. Just to watch Astaire walk across the screen is a liberal education in rhythm. And Ginger steps with him, step for step, asking no quarter from the world's finest dancer. And just as though this weren't enough, there is also the ravishing Irene Dunne, more beautiful than ever, singing "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" from the original Jerome Kern score. There are no elaborate, girly dance routines in "Roberta." Instead, we are given a fashion show that every woman will want to see and men, despite their protests of lack of interest, will enjoy, too. The story is more plotty than average and deals with the amusing situation of an All-American football star trying to manage his inheritance of a smart Parisienne dressmaking establishment. There are complications, of course, including his romance with the chief designer and the love of his pal for a phony Polish countess. Ginger plays the latter rôle with a gorgeous comedy accent. Randolph Scott is the football player. Claire Dodd, his jealous American sweetheart, and Helen Westley, the lovable Aunt Minnie. Victor Varconi plays an impoverished Russian doorman. "Roberta" is a fast-moving farce that because of Irene Dunne and the dancing of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers rates the highest recommendation -AAAA

Her knife-edged portrayal of the spirited little guttersnipe caught on ... lifted her out of syrupy roles, and it's been bigger and better neurotics for Miss Lupino ever since! In "Ladies in Retirement" she managed a cozy little job of strangulation that'd make Lady Macbeth look silly. Now, everyone's standing around on one foot, waiting to see what she's up to in 20th Century-Fox's "Moontide." You'd never guess she was imported from England originally to do a dewy-eyed "Alice in Wonderland." But you might very well guess that 300 years of acting is her heritage. She says, "I used to be frivolous, overpainted.. simply awful!" But one day she met that nice Louis Hayward and he said to her, "Go wash your face." She did, and now she's Mrs. Hayward. Walks around the house sans shoes, collects guns and blanches when reminded of that old epithet, "Hollywood's Dizziest Dame."
