The venom Emily Wilson showcased in her review of The Odyssey is quite best understood as follows. Academics have always held seething jealousy towards people with an X factor - the artists, the media members, the public intellectuals. Many wish to be in the spotlight but often lack the razzle dazzle to get there. They play a very important role, but it is often a behind the scenes role. They need the communicators, the storytellers, the performers to get attention on their ideas. They ought to happily work in tandem with them. But they don't see it that way. They see the accolades as stolen valor. Because of this, these people are often extremely dismissive of the artists, attempt to diminish their work, and belittle them. I see it all of the time.

He named it “Philadelphia,” which in Greek means “brotherly love,” because of the great love he had for his older brother, who was named Eumenes II, and preceded him as king of Pergamon (Attalus was previously the general of his army). This same Greek word (“Philadelphia“) is translated as “brotherly love” in (Rom 12:10)(1 Th 4:9)(Heb 13:1).

I am not here to judge your political or moral beliefs. But let me remind you that there is no Republican Navy or Democratic Navy. The armed forces protect all Americans. Now, I don't mean to minimize the tremendous influence that a sitting president wields on military matters while in office. And you may object fiercely to the current president's military choices. But elected officials come and go, and it would be wrong to conflate politicians with the brave men and women who dedicate their lives to defending our country in the armed services. The president may be commander in chief, but only until the next one is sworn into office.
