Nur selten sah man die DFB-Stars mal außerhalb. Zwar war das Hotel historisch und gediegen, das beste Haus am Platz. Mit der Burg-Atmosphäre und seinem Mittelalter-Charme gerade für die jungen Spieler aber zu altbacken. Den großen Kontrast gab es in der Vorbereitungswoche in Chicago: Die Spieler waren in einem normalen Hotel mitten in der Stadt, liebten die hippe Atmosphäre, das Shoppen, die coolen Cafés und Szene-Hotspots, gingen ständig raus. TABLE HOPPING/ PHIL VETTEL N The Green is Grant Park's dining secret One of the best dining views in Chicago be- longs to a café that has no indoor tables and a very modest menu. On the other hand, it does have a miniature golf course. The Green at Grant Park is an all-alfresco dining facility that overlooks Buckingham Fountain (a bit far away, but you can see it well enough) and offers glimpses of Monroe Har- N bor. The view is lovely during the day and even better at night (the restaurant stays open until 10 p.m. or so). Indeed, during the city's annual fireworks show on July 3, diners at The Green will be sitting pretty. In fact, it was July 3 of last year when The Green made its debut. "We were still building in June, so we opened very quietly on July 3," recalls market- ing director Shelly Sather. "That afternoon, people were showing up with grills and blan- kets saying, 'Hey, you're in our spot!' "5 The restaurant is so low profile that most people don't know it's there; that's what hap- pens when a place is only open when weather permits. When I took a cab to The Green, the driver asked me twice if I were sure about the address. Not that I blame him; the restaurant site used to be the entrance to the Monroe Drive garage. Now it's a fenced-in, 160-seat outdoor patio that's bordered by the hilly parkland behind it (which forms a natural shield against north- erly winds) and a carefully manicured minia- ture golf course (nine holes per side) to the east and west. This course is what is known as a putting course; there are no windmill or alli- gator-mouth hazards, just a series of short holes with tricky contours. Though it looks like natural grass at first glance, the course is covered with Players Turf, a high-end synthet- ic. It'll cost you $8 to play a round, which is the same price you'll pay for most of the sandwich- es on the menu, including a very good half- pound burger on a sturdy bun, with mad-hot, straight-from-the-basket fries. Joan Mitchell painting, "city landscape", 1955 Although influenced by Abstract Expressionist artists in New York in the early 1950s, Joan Mitchell did not prioritize self-expression: her often exuberant abstractions were “about landscape, not about me,” she once explained. Mitchell painted large, light-filled canvases animated by loosely applied skeins of bright color—here infused with the energy of a large metropolis. The title suggests a relationship between the painting’s network of pigments and the nerves or arteries of an urban space. The sense of spontaneity conveyed in City Landscape, however, belies Mitchell’s methods. Unlike many of her contemporaries, who were dubbed “action painters,” Mitchell worked slowly and deliberately. “I paint a little,” she said. “Then I sit and look at the painting, sometimes for hours. Eventually, the painting tells me what to do.”
