What is medicaid? Medicaid is a government health insurance program that provides health insurance for people who are low income (up to 133%-138% of the federal poverty line). Eligibility can vary from state to state depending on if a state has expanded Medicaid. Medicaid covers the majority of substance use treatment in the US.

We compared those who expressed support of an OPC in the neighborhood (responding strongly agree or agree) to those who did not (responding neutral, disagree, strongly disagree, or don’t know/refused to answer). We then analyzed responses to determine whether certain characteristics, such as sociodemographic factors or experiences with drug-related social conditions, were associated with support for the OPC.

Between September and October of 2024 (three months before the opening of the OPC), researchers surveyed 125 adults who lived or worked in the neighborhood of the forthcoming OPC. In January 2025, the first state-authorized OPC opened in Providence, Rhode Island. This study assessed neighborhood support for the forthcoming OPC and explored whether specific factors influenced people’s opinions, such as age or prior awareness of OPCs.

Subpopulation Analyses for the Study of Overdose Disparities with Dr. Manuel Cano. Assistant Professor, School of Social Work - Arizona State University Analyses of overdose racial disparities often highlight important differences in outcomes between broad racial/ethnic groups (e.g., White, Black, Latine/x, Asian). But what additional disparities are observed when examining more detailed subgroups (e.g., Puerto Rican) or the intersection of race/ethnicity with other dimensions of identity, such as place of birth, place of residence, gender, age, or educational attainment level? We will discuss examples, challenges, and data opportunities and limitations related to examining overdose mortality disparities in detailed subgroups. April 17th at 12 PM.
Resources for Centering Racial Equity in Data with Erik Wills Human Research Specialist at the People, Place & Health Collective Erik Wills, MPH, Human Research Specialist at the People, Place & Health Collective, will share valuable tools and best practices for integrating racial equity into research. This presentation will provide an overview of the resource library that is available to the COBRE community. The library offers articles, toolkits, and webinars that address key topics such as: the data life cycle, best practices, evaluation, visualization, and result dissemination—all through a racial equity lens. Approaching Health-Related Research in Native American Communities with Dr. Tommi Gaines Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Division of Addiction Science, Prevention & Treatment, Washington University School of Medicine Native Americans have been greatly affected by the opioid epidemic, facing high rates of opioid use, overdose, and mortality. This talk will explore how culture and context influence health in Native American communities and highlight how Native Americans engage in the research process to improve community health and reduce substance use disparities.
