A preprint highlights service run by the biological community and supported by The Company of Biologists (@biologists.bsky.social).

(C) Schematised representation of an early sporophytic filament. Three main cellular processes take place during growth: 1) apical growth, 2) cell rounding and 3) branching. Three cell types were defined along the filament, from the tip to the center, according to their shape (E, I and R, based on the width/length ratio), position (α, β, γ and δ) and age (1, 2, 3 and 4; defined as the time since their formation from the apical cell division). Branching occurs on all cell types except the apical cell.
