*** I would ask my conservative and personal friends *not* to defend me on this thread...though I appreciate it. Please save those views for another discussion on another day. This thread is for me to let those who are angry with me express themselves and stand up for those they protect, which I admire greatly and hope that (usually) I do the same. *** Many are upset with me for my statement on Charlie Kirk last week. Horrified and saddened by the murder, I posted that while I disagreed with some of his statements I liked him and the way he debated. That was taken as an endorsement of views I wasn't aware of, disagree with, and understand wny so many are upset about. The videos I was most familiar with are the Oxford debate, Jubilee debate, Gavin Newsom interview, Bill Maher interview, and some of those after the assassination by people like Chris Cuomo and Bill Maher. Those represent the person I was familiar with, and I appreciated the vigorous debate and willingness to speak with those he disagreed with. Other videos, as many who were angry with me but took the time to reach out, share, and even watch together, helped me develop a different view, and those have been spelled out in detail in the many critical posts about my statement on various platforms. Thanks very much for those who took the time to write constructive messages and the sincere discussions we had afterward. I'm sorry for not posting a more careful statement in the first place, and if I could go back and rephrase it I would say that I believe strongly in fierce debate, don't want anyone to feel threatened or unloved, and abhor violence. I am still terribly saddened by the assassination, as I am when anyone is harmed, from students to Minnesota state Representative Melissa Hortman, her husband, Mark, State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette. I mention their names specifically because I agree with many that their deaths weren't decried enough.
