The book is also rich in detail and intriguing vignettes: a British voter can only read in envy at the glamour apparently on offer at one American polling stations where voters could “straddle a luxury motorcycle” (p. 117) while placing their cross in the box! Most fundamentally, though, the ritual of my march to the polling station on the appointed day is convincingly shown to be emblematic of excitement about politics, a broader social coming together and the feeling of being part of “something bigger than ourselves” (p. 65) that is beautifully captured by this book.
