Great comments and observations, Scott. Mainly I’m envious seeing all the bicycles in the background. And public buses and boats. Not many gas-guzzling, dark-window SUVs … which raises the question of how the Dutch can *possibly* be as happy as Americans with so little conspicuous consumption? /s

In the beginning of the 20th century, the Netherlands were the only country in Europe where your faith was recorded in the public records. They leveled everything in the center of Rotterdam, except the town hall, because it contained all the public records.
I was just there on holiday and agree. The energy and vitality of young and old alike were refreshing to see. They have their issues to be sure (housing costs), but nascent fascism does not appear to be one of them. BTW, look up DAFT. It makes an old American think it is possible to move abroad.

Hey Scott! I recommend a trip to Warsaw - to the heart of the beast - see the total destruction of the city by German occupation, plaques where people were murdered, and now see the amazing European capital city that has been reborn from the ashes. (Go to the Warsaw Uprising museum.) Then Krakow.
We were just there. Great city. Friendly people. Leiden and Utrecht were also amazing. Now on to northern France.

Our youngest, UChicago grad, moved to AMS in 2022 to work in a startup. Now in VC. Probably not coming back.
Absent reforms and safeguards, America needs to get everyone on the same page about who's responsible if we descend into another Great Depression. French Revolution, not holocaust. Maybe we should be urgently working on reforms and safeguards? Babylon Berlin's a recent show that touches on this.
