FAITH RINGGOLD The American People Series #18: The Flag is Bleeding "Faith Ringgold painted her American People Series in the 196os, an era of profound political conflict and protests for civil rights and against the Vietnam War. African Americans endured racist violence that brought destruction and death to many Black communities. Avoiding the commercial techniques of Pop art, Ringgold developed a unique figurative style to explore the experiences of African Americans during this period. Here, an ambiguous drama unfolds as three figures lock arms behind a prison-like American flag. (This version of the flag, with just 48 stars, was used before Alaska and Hawaii became states in 1959.) A Black man holds a knife in one hand and presses his other to his chest to recite the Pledge of Allegiance — or is it to touch a wound? A white man "packs a gun on each hip, ready to draw, Western style," Ringgold has noted. The woman links her companions, yet their relationships remain unclear. Blood drips from the flag's stripes, implicating the nation and its citizens in the violence.
