Canada just introduced federal privacy legislation which would create a new fundamental right to privacy, change how data can be collected and used, and form a data protection regulator, among other measures.

The bill also includes efforts to curb so-called “surveillance pricing,” where merchants use users’ personal data to offer rewards and discounts.
