It’s MLK Day again. A lot has happened in a year. A lot is happening right now, especially if you’re in Minnesota. Here in Prescott, I was a bit nervous to see if there’d be a dip in the attendance or spirit from the prior year. I got to the Prescott College Welcome Center parking lot a little early and didn’t see a lot of people. Within 20 minutes though, the place was packed. Manuel Lucero spoke and smudged the crowd with sage. The Bucket List popped out an Afro-Brazilian warm up of beats to set the pace of the march. The crowd started their way down Grove towards Gurley. Prescott PD were polite and organized, and while it was cold enough to dawn winter gear, the sun chased that chill away in no time. The march proceeded down Gurley and around Courthouse Square, and after a brief pause to pull everyone together, the march wound its way back up to the Prescott United Methodist Church for a celebration of the day complete with hot chocolate, music, speeches and any attempt to exercise the act of connection between people. It was worth it to go, if for any other reason than we as citizens still have the right to hold events like these without fear of retribution or persecution. Unlike years before and all the variety of other marches and protests, there’s a nagging feeling that these events might become harder to sanction in the near future, at least not without having to kiss a ring or two. Still, events like today, and past recent protests and marches, fill one with hope that the binary narrative so many unwilling-to-think people have been suckered into is not nearly as pronounced as it might seem in outrage media. Let’s hope it stays that way and grows. Looking forward to next year

October 18, 2025 Having photographed multiple protests where people showed up representing Antifa in black garb and face coverings, I love the fact that people protesting the federal administration’s blatant disregard for human decency towards its own population have twisted the administration’s perversion of its so-called “anti-American” stereotype on its head. While there was a noticeable lack of frogs (presumably due to supply chain issues), people made up for it in terms of other inflatables. I mean, the question needs begging after, “who’s going to pepper spray/teargas [insert inflatable character here], and not feel like a total asshole?”

Not that it hasn’t been present at previous rallies and/or protests, but the frequency seems to be increasing in what feels like an attempt to steal back from right wing “conservatives” what the right wing constantly befouls by draping reactionary politics in said symbolism in an attempt to justify their wingnut fear-based beliefs.

A color photograph of both the old and new eastern spans of the San Francisco Bay Bridge taken during the early evening. The photo was taken from an overpass on Yerba Buena island. There is no traffic on either span. On the weekend of August 31-September 2, the Bay Bridge was closed in both directions to allow for the disconnection of the old span and the connection of the new span. While there was a ceremonial drive across the bridge done by local politicians and rare car collections during the day, regular traffic was finally allowed full access in both directions after sundown. I had the chance to attend press junkets held on both spans of the bridge during the closure. I am eternally grateful to Berkeleyside for giving me the opportunity and the press pass that allowed me access and the ability to make these photos and capture a piece of history.

The Rest of The Story: I took this photograph almost by complete accident. I mean I framed the image, but I completely forgot how strong the flash was set too. When it popped all bright, I thought it’d be a lost frame. When I developed the film, the image turned out to be one of my favorites. I was visiting a hometown friend and we were walking to a convenient store to grab a pack of smokes. For the life of me, I can’t remember exactly what about the house was so intriguing. Whatever it was, I’m glad I got the shot.

The older I get, the less I like traveling this way. Period. End of story.
