We have noted with concern novel Chinese activity in the waters east of Taiwan. These actions threaten regional stability and the freedom of navigation and safety of international shipping. We reiterate our opposition to any unilateral change to the status quo, particularly by threat or use of force or coercion. It is fundamental that all navigational rights and freedoms and the safety of seafarers and vessels are guaranteed and respected.

Pourquoi la formule « Taïwan, c’est la Chine » provoque-t-elle aujourd’hui une telle sidération politique alors qu’elle correspond, en théorie, à la position diplomatique française depuis le général de Gaulle ? Parce qu’au lendemain de 1945, les États-Unis ont façonné en Asie un ordre régional reposant sur un flou soigneusement entretenu autour du statut de Taïwan : reconnaître une seule Chine, tout en faisant de l’île un pivot stratégique face à Pékin. Les tensions actuelles signalent l’épuisement de cette stratégie de l’ambiguïté.
