Ada Truelove and Court Ewing discuss the former's new horn as they dally in the witches' maze. --Do you like it? --You wear it well. --I don't think that's what I asked. --Do *you* like it? --Oh yes, it was my request. --And what did they ask in return? --Only that I be beautiful and make their maze so in return. --Such a high price to pay. Court makes this last remark while reaching out to grab a flower offered by Ada, who has plucked from the small bed apparently raised by their dalliance. #altcomics
Court Ewing emerges from the hedge maze into an opening where a chair is set with an empty easel and table before a small platform and in front of a privacy screen, all seemingly arranged for a life-drawing session. As they take off their backpack, Court's name is called by an unseen speaker, and we see them turn and smile.
Court Ewing follows the thread which has laid out for them through a maze, in which they pass by witches in ritual, a witch laying an infant on a slab, and a lion reclining on a stone square.
Court Ewing tries to correct Zaya's address of them as "Miss Ewing": "My names actually--" Zaya interrupts: "You've used the threads before?" "--I have--" Looping a tied knot around Court's finger, Zaya again interrupts: "Then I leave you to it. Goddess bless." She closes the door to the garden behind her: "Shhl-lkik." After a moment staring at the thread on their finger, Court resolute follows the thread into the hedge maze.
Rasophore Zaya leads Court Ewing into a small corridor at end of which stands an old wooden door, its knob embossed with the castle's yonic insignia. Unlocking the door, Zaya reveals it opens onto another fountain, beyond which begins a hedge maze. Zaya says, "I trust your journey here was a safe one." Court says, "I--suppose?" Uninterested, Zaya continues: "One never knows these days. But: welcome back to the maze, Miss Ewing."
The rasophore witch introduces herself as her subordinate sulks away. Court Ewing suppresses frustration and exasperation while following Zaya along the hall of the citadel's outer gate. Dialogue: "I am sister Zaya. Follow me...The mothers admire how you've captured the likeness of our favorite familiar." "...The mothers honor me with the chance to do so." "As they shall honor you and your common-law with further reward, should you continue to perform."
Court Ewing arrives at the outer gate of the witches' citadel. A columned hallway encircles the interior within which robed figures move on walkways across an expansive lawn and around a large fountain. In the distance, the interior gate entrance looms atop a large staircase. As Court approaches, a rasophore turns away from adjusting a novice's wig to ask "Miss Courtney Ewing?" About to correct her, Court replies "Yes, but it's--"
