‘Vexations’ (1893) is a piano piece by the composer Erik Satie that is supposed to be played very slowly 840 times. The first performance, conducted by John Cage in 1963, went for more than 18 hours. At the end, one audience member shouted ‘Encore!’ (Image: Sonia y natalia)

Satie also composed "Three distinguished waltzes of a disgusted dandy", "Five grimaces for a midsummer nights dream" and "Truly flabby preludes for a dog". Man was off his nut!

Why was John Cage conducting? It's for solo piano, which is not conducted. What's the real story here?

I wonder if it inspired Cage's 1987 composition ORGAN2/ASLSP "As Slow as Possible". There is a church in Germany that began a performance of the piece in 2001. It is set to be finished in 2640.
