What This Means in Practice. In New York City, the mayor appoints Criminal Court Judges to 10-year terms. Our findings suggest that replacing a single former law enforcement judge with one that has neither law enforcement nor legal service experience would, over that term, result in: ~$8.7M in taxpayer savings detention costs, ~$6M less in cash bail imposed on defendants and families, ~65 fewer people detained, and ~17 years of jail time avoided.

Data and Research Consortium for the California Racial Justice Act. The Data and Research Consortium (DRC) is a collaborative network of academics, researchers, and data scientists that exists to empower the implementation of the California Racial Justice Act (RJA) by increasing access to data and fostering rigorous scientific study of racial disparities in the criminal legal system. The DRC is uniquely positioned with the right skill sets to address knowledge gaps, and to do the translational work for legal practitioners to be able to implement the RJA with rigor.
