The national Silent Quaker Walking Vigil for Peace will take place in London on Saturday 19 September 2026, the weekend closest to the United Nations International Day of Peace. The vigil has grown out of conversations and planning amongst Friends from across Britain, supported by the national Faith in Action Team, and seeks to offer a visible, prayerful Quaker witness for peace in our current times. The walk will begin and end with Meeting for Worship and will take place silently and at a gentle pace. A circular route is planned, beginning and ending in Victoria Embankment Gardens, with a pause midway for worship, likely outside St Martin-in-the-Fields. Final details are still being confirmed as permissions are arranged with Westminster Council and the police. The vigil is intended to be family friendly, and children and young people are warmly welcome. Friends intending to come are encouraged to sign up via: quakervigilforpeace@gmail.com

Churches Together Stand for Peace Churches Together Sudbury and District will be standing for peace around the Gainsborough statue on Market Hill on Sunday 6th July from 5 to 5.30pm. This is open to everyone who wants to stand for peace. The demonstration will be strictly focused on a ceasefire in Gaza, and will not address any of the wider issues. Please bring your own banner or placard, or simply join with others to stand in prayer. You might like to wear something red to symbolise a red line which should not be crossed. Please do come along and support this call for peace.

A Maker of Chocolate and Bibles: Francis Fry’s Collecting, Correcting and Cataloguing Francis Fry, a Victorian collector and heir to J.S Fry & Sons, combined two of life’s greatest pleasures: chocolate and bibliography. Amassing one of the largest Bible collections ever known, Fry used his vast library to create a series of influential books and catalogues. He corrected and catalogued, rearranged copies and even recreated missing pages. Dr Harry Spillane (Munby Fellow 2024-25) will uncover what Fry’s habits show us about Victorian book collecting and explore the lasting legacy of this remarkable collection. A correction was made on April 4, 2025: An earlier version of this article misstated Albert Lanier’s height. He was 5-foot-8, not 6-foot-5. It also described incorrectly a Quaker organization’s role in the War Relocation Authority camp in Rohwer, Ark. It offered scholarships to college-age detainees; it did not run the detention camp. It also misstated the town where Asawa slept in a horse stall. The Santa Anita racetrack was in Arcadia, Calif., not Santa Anita.

Quakers in the Sanctuary Movement Between 1980 and 1991, nearly one million Central Americans fled political repression and violence in Guatemala, El Salvador and Nicaragua and sought asylum in the US. For much of that time, however, the US government maintained a policy of characterising these refugees as ‘economic migrants’ and refused them asylum. Founded in 1980 by two Quakers and a Presbyterian minister from Tucson Arizona, the Sanctuary Movement provided legal, financial and material aid to these refugees, in open defiance of US Federal Law. From Arizona, the movement spread to other parts of the US and into Canada. If we look to politicians for the answers, we're looking in the wrong direction. If we are fearful of our politicians, we have forgotten how powerful our choices are. We are powerful speaking truth, powerful standing for peace, and powerful united. In this week of prayer for Christian unity, let us unite to fight injustice, inequality, and spiritual poverty. This I believe.
