The original guns were built out of modified AK-74u parts, which is evident when you see the gun lying on it's side as you do here. Unlike most AK's the magazine is in the polymer pistol grip.

The description of the request, which is a replacement for the current generation of M4 (called the URG-I, or Upper Receiver Group - Improved.) They are essentially saying "we need a new rifle to replace our main fighting rifle. Yes, we know there is a 6.8 Army rifle. Anyway we want a 5.56 fighting carbine."

The US referred to the gun as "abysmal" and a lot of the reason for that likely came down to the exposed magazines. There were small batch runs of guns chambered in .30-06 which failed catastrophically, which certainly didn't help, but US forces were given a shipment of bad magazines with their initial delivery and the guns did not run properly near the end of the magazine as a result. This combined with the open holes of the magazine making them prone to take in dirt and dust and the guns ran best when recently maintained and meticulously cleaned. The French, interestingly, had a wildly different experience with their gun, including but not limited to having actual data sets that show their guns were SIGNIFICANTLY more reliable. Partly they did not have the same mismatched springs in the magazine, partly French doctrine included far more maintenance and cleaning time, and partly they had zero experiments with other rounds.

The gun from the left has an AK-like profile and kind of looks like a modified AK in profile although it is WILDLY different mechanically. The magazine in particular looks almost comical with the extension needed for the very long round which is also shown.

The Fusion M1911 "Riptide" model, with a 3" barrel, which they made a handful of examples of in 9x18 Makarov. 9x18 size wise is physically halfway between 9x17 Browning (aka .380 ACP) and 9x19 Parabellum, but it has ballistics closer to .380 than 9x19.
