Excerpt from The Great Mortality by John Kelly. Reads: In medieval Paris, several street names were inspired by merde, the French word for "shit." There were rue Merduex, rue Merdelet, rue Merdusson, rue des Merdons, and rue Merdiere - as well as a rue du Pipi. Other Parisian streets took their names from the animals slaughtered on them. There was a Champs-Dolet - roughly translated as "field of suffering and cries" - and l'Echorcheire: "place of flailing."

'The Birthday' (1915) by Marc Chagall. A woman in a dress and carrying a bouquet of flowers is walking through the centre of a room with a red carpeted floor. The room is cosy with an orange bedspread, a couple of rugs on the walls, a table with a blue runner and crockery on it and a stool beside it. The windows of the room are small. One shows only an opposing wall outside, the other has a white shade with a scalloped edge. Through it, we can see the street outside, possibly some rooftops and stars in the sky.
