Bird perched on branch photo, description from ebird: ‘Large-headed and long-legged, this rare and rotund Sumatran endemic is found only in foothill forests between 900 to 2400 meters (typically in the upper half), where it is most easily detected by its strange song, a spaceship-like “oowOOOOwooWOOH.” Male has a sky-blue back and incomplete black collar, while the female has a dull brownish back and a dull blue tail. Both sexes have a rich cinnamon crown and nape, as well as a dark line extending behind the eye. Juvenile is strange-looking, with white spots on the crown, wings, and breast. Forages quietly on the forest floor, either singly or in pairs.’

Bird perched on stone, photo. Description from ebird: ‘A colorful stubby-tailed bird, also known as “Navrang,” translated as “nine colors.” Colors are most striking when the bird is in flight. This bird has long, strong legs and a stout bill, a buffy crown with a black stripe in the middle, a black eye-stripe, and and buffy underparts with bright red on the vent. Upperparts are green, with a blue shoulder patch. It is usually seen foraging on forest floors with thick undergrowth, catching insects in leaf litter. This bird is vocal, giving its characteristic two-noted whistle call at dusk and dawn.’

Forages on the ground in humid lowland and hill forest and also in neighboring secondary growth. Calls both from the forest floor and from low perches in the understory. Gives a soft two-note whistle with a quivering, longer first note: “whoooyoop-woo.”’

The image is a Japanese woodblock print titled "Red Mask Cormorant on Rock" by Ohara Koson (1877-1945), a prominent artist of the shin-hanga movement. The artwork features a large, dark-feathered cormorant standing on a rocky outcrop, with its wings partially spread, possibly in the act of drying them or preparing for flight. The bird is rendered with detailed plumage and a distinctive long, pointed yellow beak. Waves break against the rocks it stands upon. In the background there are birds in flight in the distance.

Note the buffy underparts, green back, red undertail, and bold facial pattern. Found on the floor of forest and dense thicket. Very shy, remaining motionless for long periods. At least some populations are migratory within Africa. The call is an explosive, liquid “phwit.” Can only be confused with Green-breasted Pitta, but separated by the lack of a dark-green breast.’

Photo of bird. Description from ebird: ‘A plump, short-tailed, long-legged terrestrial bird with a red belly, a black throat, a blue chest band, and a ruddy-colored head. Juvenile is dull brown with blue in rump and tail and a horn-colored bill with a pale tip and base. Singles or pairs inhabit forest, degraded patches, and bamboo thickets in lowlands and hills. Differs from Whiskered Pitta in smaller size, black throat, lack of a pale whisker, and more extensive ruddy head coloration. Song is a two-part quivering whistle, the first part rising, the second mournfully descending: “waaaaaaopop-aaaaawwwwwow.” Also gives a piercing “whit” alarm call.’

Listen for its song, a long, slightly broken whistle. If seen, its combination of bright red crown, deep purplish-blue back, and sparkling blue wing coverts are diagnostic. Favors wet lowland and lower foothill forests with a dense understory; can occasionally be found in low-quality secondary or modified habitats.’

Midnight blue above and blinding scarlet below, with a dark head, bright blue wing coverts, and a glowing silver line trailing backwards behind the eye. Garnet Pitta is very similar but has a bright red crown; ranges barely overlap, if at all. Despite incandescent coloration, can be difficult to see as it forages in dense undergrowth; especially favors well-shaded gullies and gulches. Listen for its song, a pure ascending whistle which ends abruptly.’

Restricted to lowland forest on the Banggai and Sula Islands, where it is unmistakable. Song is typical of the genus: a two-part tremulous whistle, rising on the first part, and falling mournfully on the last part: “waaaaaaaaop-aaaaaaaawow.”’
