The "rewrite it in Rust" crowd is hurting the language. Not helping it. Rust solves a specific problem: memory safety without a garbage collector, with zero-cost abstractions. That's a hard problem. It took decades to get right. The language deserves respect for that. It doesn't deserve to be the answer to every question. I've seen teams rewrite working Go services in Rust because the benchmarks looked good. The latency difference was 4ms. The onboarding time for new engineers tripled. Two senior devs left because they didn't want to fight the borrow checker on a CRUD API. That's not engineering. That's cosplay. Rust belongs in kernels, game engines, network stacks, latency-critical systems where GC pauses kill you. It doesn't belong in your SaaS backend because someone on Twitter said so. The language is exceptional. The evangelism is making it look like a cult. Every failed adoption is a story someone tells to justify never touching it. L9 - Lawrence Jones in • 3rd+/ Engineer at incident.io + Follow Charity Majors recently shared a brilliant post about the divisions between Al enthusiasts and skeptics. Her description of a conference talk about Al benefits hit me square in the face having done just that at LDX last week, so I'm taking her advice and sharing some of "the bad parts". So... how do you ensure you understand what you ship when Al wrote the code? Our team haven't felt any dire consequences of this yet, but we're all quite worried about our understanding of the codebase fading as we increasingly lean on Al to build it. We're still reviewing (most of) our code as humans, but it's not the same as if you'd written it yourself, especially when it happens in half the time. One idea we've had to tackle this is a '/vibe-check' skill. The idea is to run this before you close your Claude session, just after finishing the implementation and testing it. The skill identifies several themes around what you've built-architecture, codebase idioms, etc-and asks you what you'd like to be quizzed on. You then say "ask me questions on blast radius" where it will either ask directly "how do you think this works" or make up a few plausible options and ask you to pick which you think we went with, and why. It'll point you at the code you should review to help you answer, the idea being that this joins you up with the implementation and helps build the map you need to debug this if it goes wrong. Providing this to engineers privately allows them to ask questions in a safe space, without judgement, potentially before they ask for review themselves or ship it. Over time the skill tracks themes that it's asked you about before so it can focus on new things that you_ as the author may not be sure about.
