Ctrl-1/2/3/4 allow you to quickly switch between virtual desktops (spaces) and use them for different purposes. This however relies on the following two settings to keep the spaces in place and to allow switching to an app without being thrown to a random space. The last one was especially annoying.

One thing I haven't figured out is moving a window to another space with a keyboard shortcut (Shift-Super-Page Up/Down on Linux with GNOME). A workaround is that you can pick up a window with a cursor (e.g. with a three finger drag - another highly recommended tweak) and use Ctrl-1/2/3/4 to move it.
