Me using WindowsXP in the year 2000! This is actually a screen I ripped from kurlander.net who is keeping the torch alive on this 30 year old app. ComicChat was a free chat client that came with WindowsXP. You could select an avatar and they would be added to panels spaced by timing and dialogue. It would interpret specific ::emote:: text and select the expression you chose with the mouse or hotkeys when sent. 6 expressions: causal, sad, angry, etc. This example has a colorful art deco living room as a background in comic/animated watercolor style. Lots of pink highlights. The character is in the center and added by the chat program. This one is a hefty, but quite fetching anrthopomorhic (Furry) housecat in a flower patter kimono. The character pops because it is monochrome (black and white pixels only). His round face is wry but friendly. Above him the IRC text has been rendered as a speech bubble. In an IRC client, this will show as only text, but comic chat uses template graphics like a video game to simulate drawing and composition. The text reads: "STEP 3: SWITCH TO COMIC STRIP MODE. AFTER ALL, THIS IS COMIC CHAT!" This happened to be in the context of the instructions provided on the website kurlander.net on how to try Comic Chat yourself! But here, it might as well be me offering tech support to all my friends, as I was wont to do in the year 2000 when people still didn't understand what a hard drive was or how to connect a printer using the directions :D
