Conclusion The findings of this study are both encouraging and concerning. Encouragingly, we found that makerspace experience was associated with substantial STEM identity gains for both genders, narrowing the gender gap significantly among occasional participants. Provided that the mission of STEM education is not to turn everyone into a scientist or engineer but to cultivate citizens with the necessary science affinity to become successful in diverse career pathways while being able to engage in scientific discourse about major issues facing society, we anticipate makerspaces to provide fertile ground nurturing such a culture. However, it is concerning that only men showed an additional boost in STEM career interest from makerspace participation. This pattern raises equity concerns, warranting further study of long-term outcomes. This study calls for a shift of attention from simply building more makerspaces to thoughtfully designing inclusive maker cultures and implementing sustained pedagogical support. This requires careful attention to activity design, cultural responsiveness, instructional scaffolding, and ongoing support that helps students navigate the complex transition from identity to career commitment
