Goofy special effects, baffling story and directorial decisions aside, the film does have redeeming features. The commentary on the necessity of pain and suffering for personal development is surprisingly well done. And of course "What does God need with a starship?" is one of the all-time great Kirk lines.
Christopher Lloyd as Klingon Commander Kruge briefly cradles his vicious looking pet Klingon Jackal(?) shortly after it was killed in an Enterprise counter-attack. Lloyd plays Kruge not as a sympathetic or relatable villain, but as one with a sense of honor and who genuinely believes in the superiority of his culture and species. And believes just as strongly in his goal of obtaining the Federation's new "weapon" to protect and advance his people's dominance in the galaxy. Of the preceding Klingon portrayals his seems closest to John Colicocs turn as Kor in "Errand of Mercy", though Kruge has much less of a sense of humor.

Demona, easily my favorite character. And even as a lifelong Trekkie I would have to say Marina Sirtis' best role. An excellent and fun villain in the vein of Magneto. Sirtis really gets to show her acting chops here in a way she was never allowed to with Troi on TNG. Sirtis was just one of 9 Star Trek actors who would appear on the show, most of them in recurring roles. Clearly the people in charge of casting had great taste.

In a story I think must have inspired a "dinosaurs survived in space" episode of Voyager years later, Star Trek TOS novel #75 "First Frontier" uses the Guardian of Forever to tell a fun time travel story. On that score it's not as good or tight as "Yesterday's Son" but is an enjoyable romp that's true to the series.

Geneforge, a great cRPG with a story that manages to be gripping and thought provoking even though the user interface looks like it's covered in green nickelodeon slime. Was remade as "Geneforge 1 Mutagen" a few years ago but I have not played that yet.

The poster for "The Mummy" (1932) is arguably the most beautiful of those in the classic Universal monsters cycle. Though I think a strong case could be made for "The Bride of Frankenstein" poster.
