He started selling the pitons he made to other climbers. $1.50 each out of the back of his car. Simple, good gear that worked. Climbers told other climbers and demand grew faster than he could make them.

By 1973, the gear business had turned into clothing. He named the new company after a wild, remote region at the bottom of the world. Patagonia. Still no interest in building a corporation. Just wanted to make things that lasted and get back outside.
